NSW Data Centre Investment Unlocks Jobs, Skills and Energy Transition Opportunities

The National Electrical and Communications Association of New South Wales welcomes the New South Wales Government’s announcement to progress 15 major data centre projects through the Investment Delivery Authority, recognising it as a decisive step in positioning the State at the forefront of the digital economy and energy transition.

This announcement provides strong confidence to industry and reinforces New South Wales as a leading destination for large scale infrastructure investment. With projects collectively valued at $51.9 billion, the initiative reflects sustained private sector confidence and a clear pipeline of work for electrical contractors and the broader construction sector.

Data centres are critical infrastructure and are fundamentally electrical in nature. Their delivery relies on a highly skilled electrotechnology workforce across design, installation, commissioning and ongoing maintenance. This investment will support jobs, strengthen supply chains and create long term opportunities for apprentices and skilled trades across New South Wales.

NECA NSW recognises that this scale of growth brings both opportunity and responsibility. The integration of data centres into the energy system, alongside planning and environmental considerations, requires a coordinated and practical approach. The government’s decision to release a Data Centre Consultation Paper is a positive and constructive step towards ensuring development is sustainable, well planned and aligned with broader infrastructure priorities.

NECA NSW &ACT Executive Director Mark Stedfut said the announcement demonstrates the value of strong collaboration between government and industry.

“This is exactly the type of investment New South Wales needs to support economic growth, digital capability and long-term jobs for our industry.”

“Electrical contractors are ready to deliver this infrastructure, and we welcome the Government’s commitment to working with industry to ensure these projects are delivered efficiently and sustainably.”

“We see this as a partnership opportunity. By working closely with government on workforce, planning and energy integration, we can ensure these projects are delivered on time, at scale and to the highest standards.”

Industry data highlights the strength of this sector. There are already around 90 data centres operating across New South Wales, with investment growing by approximately 65 per cent annually over the past three years. Data centres now account for 12 per cent of all non-residential building investment in the state.

NECA supports the Government’s consultation process and will actively engage to provide practical, industry informed input. This includes working collaboratively to strengthen workforce pathways, support apprenticeships, and ensure electrical contractors can continue to deliver critical infrastructure safely and efficiently.

The Association looks forward to continuing its partnership with the New South Wales Government and industry stakeholders to ensure data centre investment delivers lasting economic benefits, supports the energy transition and builds a stronger, more resilient electrotechnology sector for the future.
