NECA Supports Queensland Government’s New Electrical Apprentice Safety Guide

The National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA), Australia's peak body representing electrical and telecommunication contractors, has welcomes the launch of Queensland’s updated Safe Working and Supervision Guide for Electrical Apprentices.

Oliver Judd, CEO of NECA, praised the Queensland Government’s initiative, stating:

"As the CEO of NECA, the peak body for Australia's electrical and communication contractors, I wholeheartedly support the launch of the updated Safe Working and Supervision Guide for Electrical Apprentices. Ensuring the safety of our future electricians is paramount, and this updated guide provides invaluable tools and knowledge to help apprentices, employers, and supervisors prioritise safety on the job. The tragic losses we’ve seen in the industry underscore the urgent need for such measures. NECA is committed to advocating for a safe working environment for all apprentices, and we commend the Queensland Government for taking this essential step towards a safer future for our sparkies."

The guide, launched by Queensland’s Deputy Premier and Minister for Industrial Relations Jarrod Bleijie, aims to significantly enhance electrical safety practices and reduce workplace incidents. Since 2010, Queensland has tragically lost four apprentices to preventable electrical incidents, highlighting the critical need for enhanced safety education and awareness.

"Every apprentice has the right to come home safely at the end of their shift," added Mr Judd. "This updated guide equips apprentices and supervisors with clear, practical strategies to identify risks and confidently refuse unsafe work practices. NECA applauds this proactive move to ensure safer workplaces for our apprentices across Queensland."

NECA will continue to actively support and collaborate with state governments and industry stakeholders nationwide, advocating for comprehensive and effective safety standards to protect the next generation of electricians.
