Quality Controls and Management

31 May 2026
Location: ACT , NSW , QLD , TAS , WA

This month focuses on one of the most critical upstream causes of incidents, defects, and legal exposure.

Quality Controls and Management

In electrical work, failures don’t just happen at the point of installation.
They often emerge later — during energisation, handover, or even years after completion.

Incidents occur when:

  • scope is unclear or undocumented
  • testing is incomplete or not recorded
  • certificates are issued without proper verification
  • Inspection Test Plans (ITPs) are bypassed
  • equipment used for testing is not reliable
  • assumptions replace evidence

This month’s toolkit is designed to challenge those gaps before they turn into incidents, rework, or legal exposure.

What's included in the Toolkit

  • Four new Risk Focus Toolbox Talks
  • Each designed using the Risk Focus standard:
    • realistic case study
    • structured discussion
    • clear non-negotiables
    • direct link back into your management systems.

Toolbox Talk 1: The importance of quality in electrical work

A real-world case study examining how poor documentation, unclear scope, and incomplete records can expose contractors years after a job is finished.

Key focus areas:

  • defining scope and exclusions before starting
  • documenting pre-existing defects and advice
  • testing and recording as evidence, not admin
  • protecting workers and the business long-term

Toolbox Talk 2: Using Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) on Projects

A commercial project scenario showing how pressure, shortcuts, and missed hold points can lead to defects discovered long after completion.

Key focus areas:

  • ITPs as live controls — not end-of-job paperwork
  • hold points and stop-work triggers
  • verification before concealment or energisation
  • proving work was compliant under investigation

Toolbox Talk 3: Calibration of Test Equipment

A high-risk incident involving faulty test equipment and incorrect assumptions about voltage readings.

Key focus areas:

  • test equipment as a critical safety control
  • verifying instruments before and after use
  • calibration and equipment management systems
  • eliminating reliance on assumptions

Toolbox Talk 4: Electrical test Results, Certificates and Bookkeeping

A regulatory prosecution case highlighting the risks of inaccurate certification and poor record keeping.

Key focus areas:

  • certificates as legal declarations — not admin tasks
  • linking testing, verification, and certification
  • ensuring only authorised, competent persons certify work
  • maintaining accurate, retrievable records
