NECA backs NSW data centre growth with fair costs and stronger workforce planning
The National Electrical and Communications Association has lodged a submission supporting NSW Government reforms to electricity network connections and cost recovery for data centres, calling for safeguards that protect electricity consumers and ensure the workforce and infrastructure are available to support growth.
NECA NSW Executive Director Mark Stedfut said data centres represent an important opportunity for investment, skilled employment and electrical contracting businesses across NSW.
“NECA supports the growth of data centres in NSW. Our members build, connect and maintain the electrical and communications infrastructure these facilities depend on, and we want this investment to succeed,” Mr Stedfut said.
“That success requires clear rules about who pays for network upgrades, how other customers retain access to electricity infrastructure, and where the skilled workforce will come from.”
NECA’s submission responds to the NSW Government’s consultation on reforming electricity network connection and cost recovery arrangements for data centres. It supports the general direction of all ten reform proposals, including stronger connection requirements, better network planning and fairer recovery of infrastructure costs.
NECA has also urged the Government to treat electrical workforce capacity as a material delivery risk in energy security planning and assessments of whether projects are ready to proceed.
“The same licensed electricians are needed to deliver data centres, new homes, renewable energy projects and the network infrastructure that keeps NSW supplied with reliable electricity,” Mr Stedfut said.
“Workforce planning must sit alongside electricity capacity and project funding. Growing the pool of skilled electricians and supporting apprenticeships are essential to delivering this investment without undermining other priorities.”
“NSW can capture the benefits of data centre investment while protecting consumers and strengthening its electrical workforce,” Mr Stedfut said.
“NECA is ready to work with the Government and data centre proponents to turn that opportunity into lasting benefits for contractors, apprentices and communities.”
