Enterprise Bargaining Update

NECA NSW is providing an update on the current enterprise bargaining environment across New South Wales and the actions being taken to support members through a period of increasing industrial complexity and uncertainty.

Recent developments before the Fair Work Commission have introduced competing applications relating to single enterprise agreements and multi employer agreements. These processes are ongoing and are expected to take time to resolve, with implications for workforce arrangements, project delivery, and cost structures across the sector.

In response, a number of companies (see logos in attached letter) have advanced a coordinated proposal to vary existing agreements. This includes a five per cent increase in wage rates effective from 1 May 2026, a one year extension to the nominal term of current agreements, and an interim payment, proposed to apply for a period of approximately three months, to assist workers in managing the increased cost of fuel. This payment would be subject to review to ensure it remains appropriate and is not withdrawn prematurely where cost pressures persist.

NECA endorses this position, as it is appropriate for these companies, and we have requested the ETU similarly endorse the proposal. However, this is not an industrywide proposal. NECA continues to advocate that pay and conditions should be agreed between individual companies and their workforces. Companies that are not part of the current initiative should act according to their own individual circumstances. We know many members are doing it tough at the moment and are not in a position to offer increases.

This position provides a necessary pathway for this group of companies to maintain workforce stability and continuity across projects while broader bargaining matters are being resolved. It ensures employees and the families they support receive a timely and meaningful wage outcome in the context of ongoing cost of living pressures, while allowing businesses to maintain operational certainty and manage contractual obligations.

This interim position does not displace broader negotiations. It supports continued engagement in good faith and enables the industry to progress toward comprehensive agreements without disruption to projects, employment, or supply chains.

NECA NSW continues to advocate for a balanced enterprise bargaining framework that reflects the operational realities of electrical contracting businesses. This includes maintaining flexibility at the enterprise level, ensuring cost structures remain sustainable, and avoiding outcomes that would place undue pressure on contractors or distort market conditions.

NECA is actively representing member interests through ongoing engagement with industry stakeholders, legal representatives, and relevant institutions. This work is focused on securing outcomes that protect business viability, support employment, deliver for electricians and their families, and maintain the long term strength of the electrical contracting industry in New South Wales.

Members seeking guidance on their current agreements, workforce engagement, or participation in this interim approach are encouraged to contact NECA NSW directly. Fill out the form below to submit your enquiry.
