NSW electricians welcome solar tariff decision

Today, peak Australian electrical industry body, the National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA), welcomed the NSW government’s decision to keep the feed-in tariff rate for electricity generating solar panels at 60¢ a kilowatt hour compared to the planned 40¢.

NECA NSW chief executive, Mr Lindsay Le Compte, said the boom in the solar industry created by government subsidies and payments of feed-in tariffs led to massive consumer demand and many electrical contracting businesses invested heavily to meet the growing consumer demand.

“The proposed cuts to the Solar Bonus Scheme would have been detrimental to many electrical contracting businesses and consumers that have invested heavily in solar,” Mr Le Compte said.

“The federal and state government subsidies and payments led to unprecedented consumer demand for solar products and many firms in NSW invested in training and new staff to cater for this growth.

“NECA welcomes the decision by the NSW government to keep the feed-in tariff at its current level to ensure consumers and businesses are able to get a return on their investment that was prompted initially by the government incentives.”
