Electrical companies to receive plain English guide to Modern Award

Thanks to peak industry body, the National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA), electrical contractors and other companies employing staff under the Electrical, Electronics and Communications Contracting Award will have access to a plain English guide to the modern award.

NECA was the only electrical industry body invited by the Australian government to tender and then receive funding for the Shared Industry Assistance Program (SIAP) managed by Fair Work Australia.

NECA is the only national employer body federally registered with Fair Work Australia that has core coverage of the electrical and communications contracting industry.

The SIAP project will roll-out in the next six months and will involve the development of two key resources for the electrical industry:

• A Practical Guide to the Modern Award and National Employment Standards that will provide a plain English explanation of the majority of the provisions of the Modern Award

• A digital video Modern Award Seminar that will be available on the NECA website

NECA chief executive officer, Mr James Tinslay, said the project will strengthen and boost the knowledge of the entire electrical industry as it will help to explain the provisions in the modern award.

“NECA is very pleased to be working with Fair Work Australia again in developing these guides for our industry,” Mr Tinslay said.

“NECA was the only employer organisation that represented electrical contractors during the Award Modernisation process in 2009 and the tremendous outcome of maintaining an independent Electrical, Electronics and Communications Contracting Award only occurred after many hundreds of hours of consultation.

“This was a great outcome for the electrical industry and the new project to develop a simple guide to the modern award is another example of NECA doing the heavy lifting on behalf of the electrical industry.”

The practical guide to the Modern Award and National Employment Standards will be available to the industry and the video will be easily accessible on the NECA Website in early 2011.

“Representing, advocating and educating the industry is a core function of NECA. We are very happy to have been given the opportunity by Fair Work Australia and the Australian government to develop these educational resources that will be very beneficial to the electrical industry,” Mr Tinslay said.

Any company that needs assistance with provisions in the Electrical, Electronics and Communications Contracting Award can receive free advice if they are a NECA Member by contacting their relevant NECA State Chapter.
